Notes: | Label source: Submitted to Messrs Hecht, Levis and Kahn who report 'well cured, dry and not sticky; present value 2/10 to 3/- per lb' JMH 5.2.02. Herewith I send you a small sample of Gutta Rambong (Ficus elastica) which I obtained from some 5 1/2 year o, ld trees in Malacca a few days ago. I should be extremely obliged if you would get me a commercial valuation. I am particularly interested in this sample, as coagulation was effected by boiling, and also on account of the trees being comparatively young., It is of course quite different in appearance from the ordinary Rambong as mentioned by Mr Derry in his report for 1900. In that report, page 5, he says 'the latex of Ficus elastica coagulates on the tree and collection is made some two or three days afte, rwards. In the case of the present sample the latex flowed so freely that most of it would have been lost had we not had small tins fastened under the incisions to catch it. I may add that we collected three and a half Imperial pints of latex which eventu, ally gave (including the scrap) 3 1/2 lbs of rubber as per sample. Copy of letter from Mr Walter Fox. Act.Div. Bot.Gard. Singapore To Director RBG Kew. Dated Jan 10th 1902 Received at Kew Feb 3rd 1902. |
