It is native of Malaya but is now widespread in the tropics, in many parts serving the same purpose as bread does in the diet of more northerly peoples. The breadfruitis, eaten fresh, baked, boiled, roasted, fried or ground up and used for bread. A paste made from it can be stored for use during the few months when the fresh fruits are not available.
