Notes: | Label source: The most general use made of this is in the covering of houses in the country. The rafters are covered with boards rather rudely put together; over these a layer of birch bark quite compact, and upon this turf. As might be expected a whol, e crop of grass grows on the roof of the house, and many small trees, birch and mountain ash. On one house I counted more than 12 trees, several 6 or 8 ft high. In towns, houses are covered with tiles. In Bergen, the walls of many houses are first built, of wood say 2 or 3 inches thick, upon this is laid birch bark, and the outside is built up with bricks. |
