Notes: | Purchased by Kew for 3/10x0Dx0ABox inscribed with 'Alku tyon kaunistaa lopussa kiitos seisoo' (Finnish) - roughly translates as 'If your beginning is beautiful you'll be thankful in the end'. The design is typical of a Norwegian birch butter box 'smortine' w, hich were very ornamental. Finnish butter boxes were usually much more simple in design. Harriet Gendall pers. comm. 2018, after consulting Norwegian scholar and Finnish visitors to Kew. |
