Label source: A plant wax from Mexico has recently come into commerce under the name Candelilla or Canutilla wax. This is the product of P. pavonis, a cactus-like plant of N.O. Euphorbiaceae, which grows to a height of 1 to 1 1/2 metres in the mountains, in many parts of Mexico and in Lower California. The yield of wax is from 2 1/2 to 5%; it is obtained by extracting the parts of the plant with hot water. Two kinds come into commerce, one brownish and the other lighter in colour and remarkably hard, res, embling carnauba wax. A sample of the hard brown wax had sp.gr. 0.9930 at 15 degrees, m.pt. 68.4 degrees, acid value 21. 1, and ester value 33.8, a lighter sample had sp.gr. 0.9360 at 15 degrees, acid value 19.2, and ester value 36.1. By rubbing and pound, ing, the wax can be powdered. It is soluble in turpentine and appears likely to find wide application in lacquers and in making telephone cables. Dr Niederstadt (Chem. Zeit.
