Notes: Label source: Bd of Agric A 21165/1915, letter 364, 1915 x p 97. A twig of beech with brown leaf, as sold in shops, has been examined, and it was found that the specimen had been dyed, and had also been treated with some hygroscopic substance to prevent, the leaves from shrivelling. It appears that the leaves were still green when the twig was cut from the tree. The dye employed in this case was Bismarck Brown or some very similar stain, and was perhaps applied by immersing the twig in a watery solution, of the dye and boiling it for a short time. The specimen may then have been soaked for some time in water containing the hygroscopic substance. The chemical nature of this substance has not been determined, but some rough tests showed the presence of a, good deal of chloride, and suggested that magnesium chloride may at any rate be an ingredient.
