Notes: Opuscular source: From S Sturge, Training School for Basket Industry, Connemara. Dear sir, In reply to your letter of the 15 Jan, I am sending you 2 of the smallest specimens of our work because they are some of the finest, and therefore the most suitab, le for exhibition purposes. you will see from our list that we make all dyes and use a great variety of rods. The larger number of rods we import at present as we have only one acre of osiers under cultivation. Land is most difficult to obtain here and, the outlay of capital required for planting is considerable - they also require attention and weeding etc. We use a no of varieties, according to the dye and quality of our work, for the finest results. For the best we use a kind technically called 'D, icles' and for ordinary use the 'Scone buff' rods. If you do not care about the baskets sent, please return them and we will supply you with others. The coloured cane is a newly invented material enamelled by a special process which is kept a secret atp, resent. The raffia is also imported but we use all our own osiers as far as they will go. Yours sincerely S Sturge. PS We make a great many for special orders for packing flowers in if you should require any. 1 July 1896
