Notes: | Label source: Hedgerow thickets and very steep rocky slopes in former cloud forest (?) and paramo (?) - (very foggy wet and cold), with Eupatorium, Calceolaria sp., Solanum sp, Fuchsia, Bocconia, Salvia, Cleome anomala ver. (visited by hummingbird.) On, NE shoulder of Volcan Pichincha on road from Cotocollao to Nono near highest point, ca. 10 - 12 mi. NNW of Quito (air) No 1627. Ecuadorian-S. Colombian Var. with longer bigger fruits (due to intergression with C glandulosa?) Slender to 15ft tall, giant, herbs to small and slender little and ascending branched trees, 7 - 8 m. tall with stem diameter to ca. 9cm. Pubescence reddish-purple, with basal 1/4 yellow green filaments of equal length; anthers basifixed and stiffly erect, the suture fading out; dis, k yellow green, massive disk with much nectar on surface. Petals greenish yellow, purple flushed without, more or less adnate to each other on margin when young, but widely ascending and spreading when older, not fleshy. Mature inflorescences 10 - 12 cm, long, the pods often pendant; fruits at this date almost, but not quite, with fully mature seed. Flowers visited by hummingbirds several times that hovered over the flowers more or less in cold fog, late in the afternoon. Common in hedgerows and very st, eep slopes on either side of winding road descending to Nono. |
