Notes: | Label source: See Bot. Mag Feb 1st 1903. Report by Ide & Christie 72 Mark Lane E.C. 9.3.02. The material can well be the Sansevieria you indicate, it is a good class fibre much liked this end. Value today 35 pounds sterling per ton. Called upon Messrs Id, e & Christy who informed me that Sansevieria fibre from Cuba is not a popular article of commerce only odd sample bales having been let in this country. The plant thrives in Cuba but money is required to develop the industry. J Mist. ? 2.4.02. I enclose, specimens of the fibre of the magnificent Sansevieria which flowered in the Mexican House last year. I am corresponding with the gentleman (Dr Heath) who sent the plant to the Royal Botanic Society (from whom we have it), and he tells me that it was intr, oduced by a Cuban House as a fibre plant which house came to grief, because the business of growing the plant was not carried out in a practical manner. He adds, the fibre is of a fine white silky colour, and is of enormous strength, a few strands would, hang a man, and sends the enclosed specimen.
