Notes: Label source: Alfred Smetham FICFCS Analytical & Consulting Chemist. Laboratory 14 Cereal Court 16 Brunswick Street, Liverpool December 21st 1908. To: J Masters Hillier Esq. Dear Sir, I have submitted to you some nuts from Mexico which, it is said, could, be obtained in considerable quantities if they are found of sufficient value to justify the importation. A mechanical analysis showed the seeds consist of shells 93.26 % and kernels 6.74%. The pericarp yielded 5.90% of a yellow oil which was solid at the, temperature of the laboratory, but I did not examine it further. The kernels yielded 64.85% of a nearly white oil, solid at the ordinary temperature, and with a smell somewhat resembling coconut oil. The oil from the kernels yielded the following analyti, cal figures: Saponification value 246.4, iodine value 18.98%, specific gravity @ 60 degrees F. .922. These figures show that the oil very closely resembles palm kernel oil. As I have not met with these nuts before I am venturing to trouble you to let me k, now what they are. You have been so good in hepling me before that it emboldens me to tax your generosity once more. I am dear sir yours faithfully, A Smetham. P.S. I am sending one of the nuts under separate cover. Apparently Cohune nuts Attalea cohune,r, eferred to Bull. Imp. Ind. May 21st 1903. p.xxv to vi, also extract from Kew Bull 1893 p. 328. To JJ Holland esq. Dear Sir, I am exceedingly obliged to you for the full account you have given to me of the Cohune nuts. Except as regards the yield of oil by, the kernels, my results are in close agreement with those obtained by the Imperial Institute with the nuts from British Honduras. Regards A.S.
