Notes: | Label source: Sample of 'Junco' from Brazil. Haw & Co, 11 Old Hall Street, Manchester The sample has been identified as the pith of a rush (Juncus sp) and Junco is the Portuguese word for that plant. Similar pith, though mostly of smaller diameter can b, e obtained in this country by peeling the common rush (Juncus effusus and J. conglomeratus). Rushes split in half were formerly used for the wick of rush-lights, and rushes are sometimes used for making mats and chair bottoms, but no information has been, received at Kew to show that the peeled pith of the rush has any use or commercial value in this country at the present time. LAB 22.5.23. Letter 224,1923:XV. p.... May 24th 1923 Messrs Haw & Co. Acknowledge the receipt of their letter of the 14th insta, nt and in reply to say that the sample of 'Junco' from Brazil, submitted for identification, is the pith of a rush (Juncus sp). 'Junco' is the Portuguese name. There appears to be no information available as to the economic use of the pith in Brazil or in, this country. |
