Notes: | Label source: With JE Lawrance's compliments J Dufficea Esq. Adelaide Ide & Christie, 72 Mark Lane, London EC Letter dated 14th September 1910 to Mr Hillier re. P.australis 'The Agent:General for South Australia has been good enough to keep his promise t, o obtain for me samples of the dredging in Spencer's Gulf of the submerged remains of this plant from which the 'Marine Fibres and Yarns Ltd' purpose making spinning material and on the basis of which they have founded their company. I send you the larger, portion of this sample from which you will see when the fibrous substance is derived. This would appear to spring chiefly from the nodes of the stem the internodes being bare. I was quite certain that the long ribbon-like leaves could not yield the fibre, for spinning purposes. Perhaps this specimen of the stuff as it comes from the sea may be interesting to you and your colleagues at Kew. Believe me, yours faithfully Mr Christie. |
