Notes: | Opuscular source: Letter 82,1916: x.p.150, March 15th 1916 - 'Pita del Opon' (Bromelia sp.) and Vetivert roots from MT Dawe, Bogota, Colombia, reports on. 'The sample of Vetivert root is very good, clean & good flavour -- if bulk as per sample to-day's v, alue is 40/- to 45/- per cwt. Can your friends ship a parcel at once it is much wanted' (MS Phillips of Messrs Bowyer & Hartlect 147, Fenchurch Street, London E.C. 14th March 1916 to Mr.Willier). Sent to Mr Hillier to Director 15.iii.16. 'In the same parc, el I enclose a sample of vetiver roots, and should be obliged if you would tell me if there is any market for the roots or oil in England and if so what the respective values of the root and oil are.' (MJ Dawe, 27th Jan 1916 recd. at Kew March 1 1916) Opu, scular source: Letter 82, 1916, x.p.150) Bogota 27th Jan 1916 - Dear Sir David Prain, I have pleasure in advising you that I have to-day despatch to Kew my first contribution of Colombian plants. There are 43 in all, as enumerated in the attached list, a, nd I shall be grateful for the determinations of these at your convenience. Amongst them I send some flowers (No21) of the Fourcroya which I take to be F.gigantea, the Figue re. which I wrote you last week. Under another cover I send you a sample of fibr, e and 2 leaves of 'Pita del Opon'. The latter have apparently been deprived of their spines but I have sent for further botanical specimens. The fibre is in great repute here for its strength and durability and it is said to occur in great abundance in th, e tropical parts of the country growing in scrub forests. Information regarding tests with this fibre is given in the Revista de Obras Publicas, Ano iv, and in the same publication an article on Pita, by Victor Cordoves dated January 1909. I believe the p, lant to be identical with my No 27 of Brazil -- Bromelia fastuosa, Lindl. ? which is known in Rio Grande de Norte as Gravata. I should be glad to know whether this plant has been recorded from any other part of South America and if the fibre is known, tor, eceive any information regarding its value. 'The sample of Bromelia fibre (Pita del Opon) was submitted to Messrs Ide & Christie, 72, Mark Lane, London, E.C. who report that in bulk (100 or more tons) it would realise to day 40 English pounds per ton onth, e London market. Small quanities would not meet a ready sale.' Signed J.M.H. 15.iii.16x0Dx0Ax0Dx0AAccepted name (2019): C.zianioides (L.) Roberty | ||||
