Notes: Label source: Lacquered cup, used in drinking 'sake' the national beverage of Japan brewed from rice. Souvenir of Kyotos participation in the Japan-British Exhibition 1910. In all ceremonies in Japan, whether of a religious or social nature, Sakazuki the, sake cup, is indispensible. A marriage, if according to the true Japanese custom, would not be complete without an exchange of Sakazuki between bride and groom. It is proper in Japan as a person asking the friendship of another, to approach him with a Sa, kazuki. Kyoto, in desiring most sincerely to cement a closer friendship with you, citizens of her most honoured and respected country, ask your leave to avail herself of this cherished custom on this occasion of her participation in the Japan-British Exhi, bition and hereby to present you with this cup. May you accept it in the spirit in which it is offered and may an intimate friendship be the result.
