| Notes: | Label source: In the first stage of preparation ('Muka'). Edward Gillman, Twickenham Agent for Tao Nui, a New Zealand Chief. Bark of the Hinau tree (Dicera dentata); used by the New Zealanders to prepare the flax for dying. Flax (Phormium tenax), prepare, d for dyeing by steeping in a strong decoction of the Hinau bark. Flax dyed black, by kneading and rubbing in black mud from a freshwater river. Flax partially disengaged from the leaf; also the shell (Kuku) used for the purpose. Flax in the first stage o, f preparation (Muka). Small cord made from the flax in the first stage of preparation. Flax prepared for weaving, by soaking it for two days in water, then twisting it into hanks, and beating it with a mallet on a stone. Mantles wove from flax. | ||||
