| Notes: | Label source: (Notes which refer to many items - not actually present - as follows): 1. Fibre of Agave no 7 from Mr Sim herewith. 2. Mr CW Wright, Mr Raffill and U.S. matched the leaf this morning with a large specimen in house No.5, which appears to be, the plant figured by Rose in Contrib. USA Nat Herb as A. atrorious, the chief agave of Mexico, which seem to be different from that of Kauruishi. No.7. is common throughout S Africa and as you may remember excited your interest when I mentioned that it pr, oduced no bulbils. I have since my return examined many dry spikes and consulted many observers and am quite sure I am right in this regard to No. 7 & 8 but at the present no fresh spikes are available. As this species No 7 is quite hardy throughout Nat, al and grows in every kind of situation it is possible that it may be found fit for fibre production. I have smashed a leaf, and send under separate cover two samples of the fibre the rougher just as the beating left it, and the other after scraping some, what, and would be glad to hear if the fibre is considered worth further attention. No 8 appears to be the same species as No 7 but with variegated though its hardiness is not the same as that on no 7. The others are all more tender and do not stand in o, ur upcountry districts, and are all taken from cultivated specimens. Extr. letter 320, 1907, TR Sim, Natal to Director 26/08/1907. | ||||
