Notes: | Label source: From a late Bronze Age farmstead site at Itford Hill, nr. Lewes, Sussex. (c.600 B.C.) This carbonized grain has been examined by Dr. Hans Helbaek of Copenhagen who reports that it was hulled barley of the six-row species. Both the main for, ms were present, the nodding Bere (Hordeum testrastichum), the spike of which is lax, narrow and tetragonal in cross section, and the erect form (Hordeum hexastichum), which has a dense and broader spike, hexagonal in cross-section. Seeds of fourteen weed, species were dispersed among the grain. Over eleven pounds weight of this carbonised barley was found in a circular sstore pit in the floor of a circular hut which had also contained an upright loom. The hut was one of four within an earthen compound whi, ch was originally surrouned by a wooden palisade. Ref. 'Early Crops in Southern England' by Hans Helbaek. Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society for 1952 New Series Vol. XVIII, pt. 2. The excavations were carried out by the Brighton and Hove Archaelogical, Society under the direction of Mr GP Burstow, F.S.A. and Mr GA Holleyman, F.S.A. 1949-1953. The full report of the excavation will be published in the Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society. (Letter D.2933/56/M.) | ||||
