| Notes: | Label source: Oak Wood From 'Chequers of Hope' Inn Canterbury destroyed by the fire in 1865 Letter from Museum & Public Library Canterbury 3rd March 1914 - Dear Sir, In answer to yours of this morning, re oak from Chequers Inn, Canterbury, I have not the, slightest doubt that your specimen of charred wood is from the dormitory or the 'Chequers of Hope' Inn which unfortunately was destroyed by the great fire in the High Street on August 18th 1865. It was traditionaly known as the Dormitory of the Hundred B, eds, Dean Stanley, in his interesting Memorials of Canterbury, (pp 221 or see Chequers in Index) gives an interesting account of this Inn. It might interest you to know that the Domitory at the time, was used as a cabinet makers workshop by a Mr Pout, and, the fire is said to have been caused by the carelessness of one of his workmen. I found a good many notes about the Inn itself, but nothing as to any fire occurring there.
