Notes: | Label source: Letter from CRM (8.3.33), to Mr Holland: I have been unable to identify the violin wood so far. Can a letter be sent to say so, and I will have another go at it when I get back. If any more info. about it can be obtained, it would be app, reciated. P.S. According to Record in his pamphlet on Box woods holly? has sometimes been used instead of Boxwood for certain purposes as it can be dyed more easily than Boxwood. 2nd letter from CRM (5.4.33) The violin wood agrees well with the specimen, s of Zizyphus sativa Gaertn from the museum. D.450-33 Messrs WE Hills and Sons, 140 New Bond St. W1. Wood from Italy used for part of fiddle making - Ginggiolo (Italy), see copy of reply Rhamnaceae.
