Notes: | Label source: Sample of black oak from Russia. The blackness of the specimen appears to be the result of the action of iron on the tannin in the wood. Such blackening takes place slowly in oak-wood when submerged in water containing iron in solution, as, in the case of bog-oak. The black colour can be removed from the specimen, gradually from the surface inwards, by soaking in diluted hydrochloric acid. A similar result was obtained with a sample of bog-oak from Ireland See letter book IX.p.50 J.H.H. L.A., B. 25.3.14. |
