Notes: | Label source: (Letter 65, 1922: XIV.p.208) Piece of Oak from the Spanish Armada Galleon sunk in 1589 in Tobermory Harbour, Isle of Mull from Col. Kenneth Mackenzie, 4 Clifford Road, Bexhill on Sea. An examination of the specimen does not make it possible, to determine where the timber was grown. Italy is suggested, on the strength of a slight apparent probability that the wood may be Quercus conferta, Kit. A better sample, if it happened to consist of more quickly grown timber, would be more favourable fo, r identification, but it does not appear likely that the question could be solved. L.A.B. 20.2.22. From wreck of the Spanish Armada galleon 'Admiral Florence' sunk about 1589 in the harbour of Tobermory, Scotland.x0Dx0Ax0Dx0ADisplayed in 'Kew in the city' at Wiza, dry in Wood, Carpenters' Hall, Trogmorton Avenue, London EC2N 2JJ, Oct 12-15, 2016 (curated collection of wooden objects and rare timbers from EBC) |
