Notes: Label source: Two varieties are recognised, viz the black and the white. Black guatecare is a superior wood to the white variety. Weight about 70 lbs. per cubic foot, extremely hard and difficult to work as it contains silica crystals. It is very durable, and piles of black guatecare used locally along with green heart have lasted quite as well as the later wood. Its splits easily, has a long fibre and is very tough, care is needed in handling big logs to avoid spliting although as a pile it dries well. U, sed locally for piles, posts, sleepers, and shafts of carts. Guatecare is common throughout the Island growing to over 100 feet in height with a long straight bole. A considerable surplus is available for export.
