| Notes: | Production history: Arabians came to south-east Madagascar and began making this type of paper. They were the ancestors of the Antemoro (an ethnic group in Madagascar). In 1936, Pierre Matthiew started the introduction of fresh flowers in to the designs., x0Dx0Ax0Dx0AProduction technique (as relayed to JW by a worker at the site): The second layer of bark is used. It is harvested, dried and bundled for storage until required, then boiled in water for 4 hours, rinsed in cold water and dried. Then it is crushed i, nto a paste and 400g balls are made as a standard measure which makes 1.5m by 1,75m of paper at the required thickness. The balls are wetted so they become the consistency of a paste, which is then spread out on something like cotton sheeting (which is k, ept wet with running water in a special bath). Once spread out to the required thickness, the sheeting (framed for rigidity) is pulled out of the bath and whilst still damp, fresh flowers are placed on it to create the design. Paper paste is lightly smear, ed onto the fresh flowers to hold them in place and then the entire creation is left in the sun or hung on racks to dry. It is made into notebooks, greeting cards, photo albums, envelopes, bookmarks, menus and wall hangings.x0Dx0Ax0Dx0A(Other species in the genus, that can be used similarly include Gnidia danguyana Leandri and Gnidia daphnifolia L.f.)x0Dx0A | ||||
