Bark pale yellow brown, smooth with sharp thorns that persist on the main stem, inner bark sappy, exuding creamy sap which turns orange,, on exposure to the air. Leaves discolourous, dark green above, paler below. Flowers arranged on large thrice-branched terminal inflorescences, lightly scented and attracting a range of large and small bees.
