| Notes: | Note attached to specimen reads: ''Portion of a specimen from Rio Grande from N. Plant. Some shoots having leaves - carelessly dried, accompan.d the roots. 'Mil-homen' or Snake plant said to cure the bites of venemous reptiles & mad dogs - steeped in spir, it.'' Extract of a letter accompanying the specimen dated 17 June 1852 reads: ''In the packing case is a specimen of the snake plant called here 'Pao de Mil-homen' it is said to cure the bites of snakes, venemous reptiles & mad dogs & by drinking a cup fu, ll of the bark steeped in spirit every morning for 2 to 3 days a person can handle any snake without harm. The men who work in the 'Mato' always keep it by them to drive away snakes, & a bottle with a decoction of it steeped in spirit to drink in case of, being bitten, the Indians use it in many diseases but chiefly in the venereal, the specimen I send is the root which is only used medicinally, it will perhaps be interesting to Mr Hanbury (send a piece with roots to my brother).''
