Notes: Box of biscuits purchased in 1998 by Colin Clubbe (Education Section), in South Africa. Label as follows: A maroela flavoured shortbread biscuit made with 100 per cent natural ingredients. The Maroela tree is indigenous to Southern Africa, and known by, the locals as the elephant tree. The fruit is favoured by the elephants and they sometimes become drunk as a result of eating the overripe, fermenting fruit which is on the ground. The wild tree bears small fruit in great abundance and has extremely ha, rd kernels. The locals consider the gift of Maroela kernels a mark of great friendship. Christies International SA. Steenberg Estate, SA.
