Notes: Label source: The receipt of seeds of this plant and their distribution to Agric Depts in the W Indies for trial was noticed in the Agric News, Feb 22, 1919. Mr J Jones Curator, Bot Gardens, Dominica, has recently forwared to the Imperial Commiss. of Ag, ric. a fruit produced by a plant grown from the seed sent him in Feb. He states that only a few of the seeds germinated, and the plants made but little progress on account of the dry weather up to the end of June. When rain fell in July the plants grew, rapidly, and the male and female flowers were produced on separate plants. During the 1st week in August pollination was effected artificially, with the result that fruits are now ripening. Mr Jones believes that this plant may possess a considerable p, otential value on account of the oil contained in its seeds, which is remarkable for its drying properties. The flowers of this sp are pale yellow in colour, and are distinctly handsome, esp the male staminate ones which are larger than the pistillate fl, owers produced on the female plant. (Agric New Barbados xviii Nov 1, 1919 p 347. (2nd article from same journal dated xviii Dec 13, 1919 p 393. The plant a very handsome one, both as regards its flowers and fruit, and is well worth growing as an ornamen, tal. As regards its economic value, it is believed that the seeds contain an oil which is valuable on account if its drying properties. Mr J Jones Curator of the Bot Gdn Dominica, has recently written to say that he has dissected a fruit weighing 3 3/4, lb containing 42 seeds, weighing 6oz.
