Notes: Opuscular source: Letters 341, 342 x pp 107 and 108. Two young plants of Ipecacuanha in propagating pits. The roots of the Van Houtte plant are on the whole thicker than the Kew ones. One root from each has been examined. The structure of the wood an, d cortex is practically the same in the two. Thicker root has a thicker cortex. Three samples of Ipecacuanha roots as supplied by Lewis and Peat sent by CH Spencer from Stansted, RSO Essex. An examination of the roots showed no important instances of di, fference. The compound starch grains in the cortex reach a larger max size in thick roots than in thin ones. As far as the structure of the root goes, the Rio and Hohore samples might be from the same var., though they may be diff. vars. The Carthagena, root is held to be a distinct sp from the typical Ipecacuanha agrees so nearly in structure with the Rio and Johore Specimens. Signed LaB 15.xi.15.
