Notes: Label source: Specimen 184. Report upon roots of P. macrophylla recd. from W H Johnson, Aburi June 25th 1900. 17 Bloomsbury Square, Aug. 7th 1900. Unless a new purgative should have some special advantage to recommend it, it is not likely to come into us, e. If it possessed tonic properties as well so that the dose could be renewed, if it acted without griping or nausea, or if it were practically tasteless, these would be qualities that would ensure it a trial, but if it possesses none of these, no attenti, on would be paid to it. P. macrophylla belongs to the Euphorbia, which already yeilds half a dozen or more well known purgatives, usually possessing irritant properties and therefore losing their power after a time. In the absence of any information as to, it having any special property I cannot say that I think any medical man in this country would try it. Signed E.M. Holmes.
