Notes: On the outskirts of the village of San Pedro Chapulco which lies on the main road running north-east from Tehuacan towards Orizaba about 18km from Tehuacan in an upper side valley of the Tehuacan valley. Small multiple-stemmed tree to 4m ht. with a spread, ing crown. Bark grey, smooth with slight vertical fissuring on lower part, inner bark deep pinkish raspberry ripple. Woody stipules. Flowers with a calyx and corolla green tinged reddish maroon at lobe tips, stamen filaments white, anthers hairy pale pink, ish grey, style white flattened near tip and narrowing columnar, spathulate bracts reddish maroon, claw white. A few unripe pods reddish, and persistent ripe pods opening along one pod margin and reflexing. Common, cultivated with Leucaena esculenta ssp p, aniculata, Eysenhardtia, Schinus molle, Prosopis laevigata and Agave for edible pods. Also common as an understorey shrub in pine forest above Chapulco up to 2350m. elevation with Dudonea, Rhus and Ziziphus.
