Notes: On steep karst limestone slopes of the Sumidero Canyon close to the road running north from Tuxtla Gutierrez towards the small town of Chicoasen about 10km north-east of the small town of San Fernando. Medium-sized multiple-stemmed tree to 15m ht. with he, avy branching; dbh 55 cm Bark on smaller branches smooth, grey with intricate mosaic pattern, on main stem smooth mid pinkish brown shedding in long longitudinal flakes. Young shoots hallow or pithy centre. Almost leafless, a few recently flushed immature, basal resprouts. Flowers mainly in bud, a few starting to open; infloresence sub-pendulous; calyx green at base blood red at tip, standard petal deep blackish purple with a pale yellow basal blotch, wing petals white at base strong magenta at tip, stamin, al sheath white, anthers yellow, ovary reddish. Pods mainly shed and dehisced, deep purple brown, strongly lignified. Common, scattered in dry deciduous forest on sharply dissected limestone with cactus Agave, Lysiloma, Leucaena, Acacia and Alvaradoa.
