Notes: Opuscular source: Copy of Letter: London Leather Industries Laboratory, The Leather Exchange, 17 Market Street, S.E.1. Dear Sir Arthur, As you were so kind in sending me full particulars of ' Shu-liong' or 'False Gambier', I venture to send you the resul, ts of my analysis of this product: Tannin...5.2%, Non-Tans...6.1%, Insoluables...26.3%, Moisture...62.4%. At the same time I send you what I call a leather trial with the material. This merely shows the colour that the material gives, and from the small t, anning trial we can judge whether the material gives a satisfactory leather or not. As far as the leather is concerned, the colour is quite good and this material is undoubtedly a good tanning agent, apart from its strength. You will note that the sample, comes out at just over 5% of tanning on a moisture basis of 62%. I have no doubt that, under ordinary circumstances, as the material would dry out in a hot climate therefore bring up the tanning strength to between seven and eight per cent., but even at, that strength it would not be worth the freight to this country, assuming it could be obtained in considerable quantities. I also enclose a small cutting of a dye trial done on prepared cotton fabric. This is dyed with a solution containing 10% of solids, made from the material mordanted with copper sulphate, and afterwards developed with bichromate. I do not know whether these samples and info are of any use, but they may be of some slight interest. May I say that if at any future time I can be of serv, ice to you in testing out any materials you may receive, I shall be only too pleased to do a tanning trial for you and it would give me great pleasure to reciprocate your kindness. Yours faithfullfy, signed J Gordon Parker
