Notes: Opuscular source: Letter A.18508/9 Dec 1908 - Mr Hillier, Sample of hay poisonous to cattle. The chief Petty Officer minutes on 24.xii quoting Scheraz that E.arvense is harmful to cattle; if forced on them they become emaciated and suffer from ptyalism., But horses can eat it without suffering from sickness. On the other hand Schwarz says that E.palustic is considered a good food for cattle. From ?? Dr Stockman finds that the symptoms sometimes do come on very rapidly (a few hours) and are in some cases, characterised by inebriation and loss of control of the muscles. In more chronic cases there is obstinate diarrhoea. Dec 3rd 1908. DP.
