Notes: Label source: A specimen left by Mr Allen for identification consists entirely of a compact mass of adventitious roots. The lower parts of various arborescent sp of Vellozia, classified by Bentham and Hooker amongst the Amaryllidaceae, are clothed with, adventitious roots having a structure v similar to that of which Mr Allens specimen is composed. Most sp of Vellozia are native of Brazil but others occur in Africa and Madagascar. There is little doubt that the specimen submitted for identification c, onsists of the basal part of an arborescent sp of Vellozia. A similar specimen from Africa, sent to the Jodrell Lab in 1919 by Prof. Oliver, was then identified by Mr Boodle (with the assistance of the late Dr Stapf) as Vellozia sp. Letter Book 660/1933.
