Notes: Label source: The only American Cherry of commercial value for timber attains 100 ft in rich soil, occurs from Lake Superior to Nova Scotia. Wood fine and even textured aof a rich reddish brown colour. Good furniture and cabinet wood. Supplies now use, d mainly for making blocks for electrotyes. Wt. 36lb per cu ft. Grows to an average of 120 ft, with trunk of uniform size and undivided to ht of 70 ft in forests, of av. diam. 24 ins. not uncommonly 36 ins to 48 ins diam. Not v. abundant, but found over, extensive areas, not in groves, but single trees interspersed in forests of deciduous trees. Springs up freely and grows rapidly after the primal forests are cleared off. Extensively used in cabinet work. Bark has strong bitter taste used in medicine, as a tonic. Fruit is black when mature and pleasant tasting. Timber can be furnished in the W part of Canada. #60 sterling per 100 cu ft. Freight to Quebec. Spec. grav. 0.56. Wt of cu ft 34 lbs.
